George Clooney’s Thoughts On The Disney/Hulu Deal And The Positives Of Streaming Services

Actor/filmmaker George Clooney and his wife, London barrister and former UN Special Envoy adviser Amal, were in London Wednesday night for the premiere of his upcoming Hulu/Channel 4 miniseries Catch-22. The series, based on the 1961 satirical novel written by Joseph Heller, follows B-25 bombardier John Yossarian and his crew in the 256th Squadron as they attempt to maintain their sanity while fulfilling their service requirements during World War II in order to return home.

While on the red carpet, Clooney was asked by The Hollywood Reporter what his thoughts were regarding Disney’s deal to take full control of Hulu. “Well, it’s going to be pretty wild,” he said. “I mean it’s going to be the biggest company in the world! So we’ll see, it should be fun. I mean, I like [Disney chairman and CEO] Bob Iger. He’s a good friend, so I’m sure it’ll be fine.”

Clooney went into a little detail regarding other projects and how streaming services like Hulu are beneficial for those artists looking to have their stories told but are unable to get big studio funding:

“There’s an awful lot of interesting work. We have a deal at MGM, so we are still working within the studio system. But you know there’s an awful lot of good stories to be made [for] streamers right now, which is nice because I made a lot of movies like Good Night and Good Luck, and films like that, that were very small, and they wouldn’t make it at a studio anymore, so it’s really good for us, it’s a great place to be.”

Clooney executive produced the series with longtime business partner and friend Grant Heslov through their Smoke House Pictures company. The two each directed two episodes of the series and also costar in it alongside Christopher Abbott, Kyle Chandler, Tessa Ferrer, and Hugh Laurie. Adding to Clooney’s statements, Heslov chimed in on the Disney deal and his experience with Hulu, stating that “they recognize that Hulu is about taking these really great pieces of IP and making shows, and they seem to embrace it, so for us it’s been nothing but great.”

Catch-22 premieres tomorrow, May 17th, on Hulu.
