Avengers: Endgame – Hulk’s Injury Is Permanent

Potential Avengers: Endgame Spoilers

The Hulk has always been my favorite Marvel character and I have really enjoyed the development of the character throughout the Marvel films. As many people know, the big man stepped up in order to reverse the effects of the snap, but at what cost? Co-director Joe Russo sat down with ComicBook.com and discussed all that Hulk sacrificed by being the one to wield all the power of Iron Man’s gauntlet. Russo confirmed that the injury to Hulk’s arm as a result of the stones is indeed permanent:

“He’s lost an arm,” Russo told the outlet. “He lost Natasha. That’s not coming back. He’s damaged himself. I don’t know. It’s interesting. That’s permanent damage, the same way that it was permanent damage with Thanos. It’s irreversible damage. His arm, if you noticed, is a lot skinnier. It’s blackened. So, he loses a lot of strength there.”

He went on to add the hypothetical idea that there are a good number of smart people out there in the Marvel Universe who could possibly help Hulk. Maybe a new arm?  Possibly a rejuvenated arm?  The possibilities are endless.  Many are speculating that this could open the door for a well-known intelligent individual to make their appearance in the MCU…Reed Richards.  This could be a really cool way to bring in the members of the Fantastic Four into the established universe as part of Phase 4 don’t you think?

Hulk was one character who I felt went through some of the most significant changes.  He and Banner were no longer fighting over a shared body, but learned to live as one.  Russo also added that a scene was cut from the film which showed Hulk living as a solo hero during the five-year gap.  I really feel that scene would have cemented Hulk and Banner’s unification and growth.

Russo went on to add that, “I have no idea where that character goes from here. The nice thing is we didn’t have to pay attention to where it goes after this, we just try to tell a satisfying ending.”

And they have succeeded in doing so.  This leaves numerous opportunities for the Hulk and I also like his response because it isn’t a forced reaction to the film.  Their focus is to tell a whole, satisfying story and not just rush into the next film.

So my question is…what loss has cost the Hulk more damage?  The injury to his arm or the loss of Natasha?  I am curious to see where the character goes from here and how he deals with these physical, mental, and emotional challenges.  What are your thoughts? What has caused more damage?  How do you think his arm will be repaired? Leave your comments in the usual spot, and thanks for reading!
