Wow, we have been covering Avengers: Endgame for a ridiculous number of years. I guess it’s been ever since Kevin Feige took the stage and presented all of Phase 3 to us rabid fans when we knew there would be a two-part Avengers tale at the very end of the road. However, the titles back then were none other than Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War Part 2.

The second film was only renamed retroactively when (presumably) Marvel Studios realized that audiences tended to stay at home for Part 1s in series, under the assumption that they’d only be getting half of a story. As such, it made sense for them to change the title — but what the actual title would be remained a secret until earlier this year. Apparently, it went under a different title, as the Russo revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast:

“Infinity Gauntlet was the title for quite a long time, actually,”

This really is no surprise for me. I’ve actually been waiting for this reveal to drop for a long time now. Way back in 2017, I wrote a piece on Zoe Saldana casually saying they would be going back for “Gauntlet” later that year, which led me to assume the title would be Infinity Gauntlet.

Obviously, they didn’t go that way, and for good reason. I’m sure having one movie called Infinity War and the other called Infinity Gauntlet would have led to all kinds of brand confusion that could have ultimately led to a lower box office performance, but I can certainly understand them using it as a placeholder.
