Avengers: Endgame – Why The Writers Are Wrong About Cap’s Ending In Their Own Movie

This past weekend, our own Kyle Malone reported on some interesting comments from Avengers: Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, whose concept of time travel has had fans scratching their heads and debating one another in the weeks since the movie’s release. According to them in a THR interview, they had always intended for Cap to have been the husband of Peggy Carter all along.

That means that the elusive spouse who was occasionally mentioned in the canon is supposedly Captain America…but sadly, that doesn’t really hold water. From the logic established in the film, you don’t change the future when you go in the past, but create a branching timeline, meaning that he could not have gone back in time and married her unless this Cap came from an alternate timeline and an alternate future.

While that is possible, there are a couple of scenes from Captain America: The Winter Soldier that seem to contradict this logic (and that’s not even taking into account directors Anthony and Joe Russo opening contradicting the writers’ statements). The first scene is pulled from the documentary Cap sees in the museum. In it, a younger Peggy Carter states that when Captain America went behind enemy lines and saved all those soldiers, he saved the man who would become her husband.

Now, it’s possible that she is lying, but then there is one other scene I can’t shake: her “reunion” with Cap at the beginning of the film.

In the scene, we see Cap visiting an old Peggy Carter, and mid-conversation, her memory lapses and she acts like she hasn’t seen him for years. This would seem to imply that she actually didn’t live a full life with him, and was seeing him for the first time in decades. From all we know, Cap likely went back to the specified date and time for their scheduled dance, so there’s no way he would have waited years, right?

All in all, the logic simply doesn’t hold on multiple fronts, and while I can believe the writers when they say they always believed Cap was her husband, I don’t think it makes any sense based on how things turned out in all of these movies.

But what do you think? Do you agree with me or the writers? Let us know your thoughts down below!
