There was never a doubt that Avengers: Infinity War would be a massive hit, both domestically and internationally. The last ten years of introducing comic characters and presenting them with the twists and turns in their 19 films that have shaped them into the mainstream legends they have come to be have lead to this pinnacle. The moment when Marvel’s mightiest heroes meet their match. Massive box office numbers were always expected, but this last weekend, a massive achievement was attained.
In only its third weekend in theaters, Avengers: Infinity War has become the highest grossing superhero film in the worldwide market. With its total worldwide take coming in over $1.6 billion, the film has supposed both Avengers: Age Of Ultron ($1.405 billion) and The Avengers ($1.518 billion), giving it the number 5 spot on the worldwide list, with Jurassic World, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Titanic well within its grasp. Avatar still commands the worldwide list with a whopping $2.7 billion. This weekend being the film’s debut in China, which is the second largest box office in the world, these numbers are understandable.

What will be Infinity War’s final tally? How quick will it get there? Will it top Avatar’s final tally? Given director James Cameron’s recent comments about “Avenger fatigue”, it would be a moment of great irony for Marvel’s band of extraordinary beings to be the film that trumps Cameron’s epic.
