Six years ago, when Thanos turned around in the mid-credits scene of The Avengers, you could hear a pin drop in the theater. Sure, half of it may have been that most of the audience didn’t know who the hell that was, but the other moviegoers were undoubtedly awestruck by the ambition of such a reveal. To actually look to take the story deep into space? It was beyond ambitious.

And who would they get to actually pull off this menacing mad Titan? They ended up going with actor Josh Brolin. But what was it about Brolin that made them decide to go to him? Speaking with Telegraph India, co-director Joe Russo said:

“He’s such an amazing performer and so uniquely suited to Thanos. What we were looking for in the character of Thanos is the strongest, most intimidating figure in the universe. While at the same time we wanted to tell a story about a character with a really complex and empathetic interior life. There are not a lot of actors that can give you both of those things. Josh Brolin is perhaps the best example that you can find where you have somebody who has a physical presence and brings that level of intensity and threat, while at the same time having another layer always at work underneath that, which is a very complex inner life and a lot of emotional depth and texture. “

Will he actually succeed in bringing both nuance and terror to the film? That remains to be seen, but it’s a job that Brolin is well-suited for. He’s already proven many times over that he’s an amazing actor. If he can bring the domineering aspect we know he’s capable of, there is no reason Thanos couldn’t be one of the best Marvel villains yet.
