Almost a year ago, we learned that the now HBO Max series, Titans, was going to introduce Barbara Gordon in season three. Not much else was revealed about the character at the time other than she would show up in episode one. Today we via Variety we have more information about Barabara including the actress portraying her.

Savannah Welch has been cast as Barabara Gordon for Titans. According to the report, she will be featured as Gotham City Police’s Commissioner. She will use a wheelchair as it is cannon in this series that she was shot and paralyzed by the Joker. She is said to have a combative relationship with Bruce Wayne. Also, she has had a past romance with Dick Grayson. Something that will be reignited when he returns to Gotham. It will also lead to a new crime-fighting partnership.

Welch is an active spokesperson for the disability community. She herself is an amputee, losing her leg in an accident five years ago. She is known for her role in the History Channel military drama, Six. Where she played a Marine that suffered an amputation in combat. She is repped by Collier Talent Agency.

Barbara Gordon has had a rocky past in DC Comics. Her encounter with the Joker in The Killing Joke, has become a moment in her life that might as well be engraved on her batsuit. It was even further complicated in the animated adaptation of The Killing Joke where she has a romantic relationship with Batman. Writers have often struggled with telling compelling Batgirl stories.

She has been portrayed in live-action a couple of times including in the 1960’s Adam West Batman series. Also was played by Yvonne Craig. She was also portrayed by Dina Meyer in the not so memorable WB television series, Birds of Prey. We have also seen her in the infamous Batman & Robin film where she was played by Alicia Silverstone.

It will be interesting to see how Welch’s approach to Barbara Gordon. I am excited that they cast someone familiar with her disability as it will bring authenticity to the role.
