Batgirl Cancellation Was Right Call Say New DCU Boss

The infamous Batgirl cancellation was the right call says new DCU boss Peter Safran

The infamous Batgirl cancellation was the right call says new DCU boss Peter Safran. As we know, at the beginning of the big DC shakeup, before either Safran or co-lead James Gunn were hired, WB/D made the decision to completely scrap the already filmed Batgirl movie. Now in a recent article with Variety following the new DCU slate press day, Safran spoke about why Batgirl should have been cancelled.

“Batgirl’s a character that inevitably we will include in our story,” he said. “On the Batgirl front, it’s not about late in the process of the film getting canceled. I saw the movie, and there are a lot of incredibly talented people in front of and behind the camera on that film. But that film was not releasable, and it happens sometimes. That film was not releasable. I actually think that [president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David] Zaslav and the team made a very bold and courageous decision to cancel it because it would have hurt DC. It would have hurt those people involved.”

“I think that they really stood up to support DC,” he continued. “The characters, the story, the quality of all of that. I spoke to Adil [El Arbi] and Bilall [Fallah] — the directors — last week, we were chatting. We’d love to be in business with all those folks. Christina Hodson wrote it. Some people are already back in business with us. As I said, a lot of talented people were involved, but the film just was not releasable. It would not have been able to compete in the theatrical marketplace; it was built for the small screen. So, again, I think it was not an easy decision, but they made the right decision by shelving it.”

I guess we will never know? However what has been made abundantly clear is that once the film had been seen the DC bosses at the time were certain it was the right decision to scrap Batgirl and take the tax write off. Therefore, it’s interesting that Safran echoes that line. Especially given that Safran could have easily said that was a decision that preceded him and therefore he cannot comment. Instead, he says he’s watched the movie and agrees it was not releasable.

I was never that interested in the Batgirl movie when it was still coming out. However there’s some appeal to getting to watch a movie a studio decided they didn’t want you to see. Sadly without any special effects done, it would be a rough watch despite the quality it had. Maybe one day someone will get a copy and upload it online?
