New DCU Slate Revealed By James Gunn! Here We Go

James Gunn pulling back from debunking DCU rumors online. Superman: Legacy storyboarding is now underway and he doesn't have time.

The breaking news (as everyone expected) is the new DCU slate revealed by boss James Gunn. The DCEU is becoming the DCU and now we have a blueprint for the first few projects that will define this new franchise.

Bear in mind that as yet, all we know is what you read here.

The main point to note is that all the projects that were not yet announced will bet set within the same DCU, same characters, and where possible even the same actors between animated, live-action etc. However Gunn also pointed out that The Flash which is coming this year is really the kick off point for resetting the franchise into a fully  connected DCU plus other projects branded as Elseworlds and these will include the likes of Joker 2, and The Batman 2 plus others.

However then we get to what is brand new and the first chapter of the DCU will be subtitled ‘Gods and Monsters’. This isn’t all of chapter 1, just the first few projects to whet our appetites. You can catch the full video below for a bit more detail from Gunn himself. However below is the official press release information for each project announced. There’s 5 new films, and 5 new HBO series.

Creature Commandos

A seven-episode animated show in which Amanda Waller creates a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners; Gunn wrote all the episodes of the first season.

Waller

Starring Viola Davis, this series features Team Peacemaker and will be written by Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Supernatural). This is a live-action series

Superman: Legacy

We knew Gunn was writing a Superman film and this is it.

Written by Gunn, the film will hit theaters on July 11, 2025, and focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.

Booster Gold

Booster Gold uses basic technology from the future to pretend to be a superhero in present day.

Lanterns

This enormous TV event series follows intergalactic cops John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they uncover a dark mystery.

The Authority

DC’s WildStorm characters will join the DCU as members of The Authority take matters into their own hands to do what they believe is right.

Oh and we’re also getting another brand new Batman.

The Brave and the Bold

The DCU will introduce its Batman and Robin in this unusual father-son story inspired by Grant Morrison’s comic series.

We know Robin in this movie is Damian Wayne.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

This science fiction adventure, which will be based on Tom King’s amazing, award-winning recent comics stories, presents a Supergirl viewers are not used to seeing.

Swamp Thing

The film will investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing.

Paradise Lost

Set in Themyscira, home of the Amazons and birthplace of Wonder Woman, this drama focuses on the genesis and political intrigue of an island of all women.

Honestly it’s hard to know where to start. My DC comics knowledge outside of Batman was also less than my Marvel knowledge. I’m therefore not familiar with all the characters mentioned, but lets say 90% of them I do know. What I would say is that Brave and the Bold was the kind of Batman animated series I disliked. Give me the darker Batman the Animated Series anyway. However I have not read those comic books. Therefore I’ll reserve any judgment. As for Superman: Legacy, depends what we get, same with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

I guess the projects which personally excite me the most are Waller, Lanterns and Paradise Lost. The way Gunn describes Lanterns makes it sound a bit darker and that’s usually up my street. I also really liked Peacemaker so Waller will bridge the gap between Peacemaker and it’s second season, which is still happening as was announced already.

As for the latter of the three I mentioned, it could be awful, but I have a feeling I’d enjoy this, so we shall see?

I’ll certainly be tuning in or watching at theaters, for now at least. My interest in this universe will be directly linked to how much I enjoy what comes next.

Well, what do you think as the new DCU slate is revealed by boss James Gunn? Which projects are a wow and which ones are a meh? As always, leave any thoughts below on this news.
