Batman Casting Miles Away Says James Gunn

Yesterday saw the official confirmation of the DCU’s Superman, however boss James Gunn says the Batman casting is miles away. Chatting on social media, as he does, DC co-boss James Gunn was responding to a fan on Instagram asking him about the casting process for the next Batman movie, The Brave and the Bold.

You can check out exactly what was said from this DCU fan account on Twitter.

To be fair, I’m not sure why anyone would be expecting anything else. Superman: Legacy is the first DCU movie, it has a submitted draft, a director and probably rough shoot date. That’s why we have casting happening for that movie. Meanwhile, as far as we know, The Brave and the Bold only exists as a pitch for now. We have a director (Andy Muschietti), but no writer confirmed and since we’re in the middle of a WGA strike, we won’t be getting one till that”s done.

In other words, Gunn and Safran may well have their eye on a few candidates, Muschietti may also. You would do this naturally. However, the actual process of casting the role is, as Gunn says, miles off.

I like the choices for Superman and Lois, which if you didn’t already know, is David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. Check out the related link above. I’ve heard quite a few fans bemoan that Corenswet looks like a young Cavill. Well, since Cavill was chosen because he looked like Superman, I think that’s kinda the point here. Of course part of this is just a lot of people liked Cavill as Superman and would have liked to see him continue.

I’ve said for a while, I think it all came down to money. How many people had heard of David Corenswet prior to the last month or so? Gunn and Safran realized to do what they want, which is have the same actor across film, TV, video game and animation, you need to get young actors and make them stars. The likes of Cavill, or Amy Adams would have cost far too much and may not have wanted to do the voice work as they have other commitments.

I think it’s the same scenario we will see with Batman. Getting an actor who won’t cost the world to put on a big contract for multiple media appearances. Who that may be, who knows? The thing with Superman, as I kinda said above, is that he need to look like Superman. Batman doesn’t really have to look a certain way, its more the gravitas they can bring to playing Batman versus Bruce Wayne.

Speculate, and fan cast away, but anything else at this point is far too fast. As James Gunn says, the Batman casting for the DCU is still miles away. Who would you fan cast as the DCU Batman? As always, lets us know below?
