Ben Affleck’s involvement with the DCEU has been on the rocks for a good year-and-a-half. Prior to the release of Batman v Superman, it all seemed like roses and butterflies (that’s a saying, right?). However, after the critical lashing of the film, Affleck seemed to take a step back.

He downplayed his involvement in The Batman as director and eventually stepped down altogether. Now, fans are currently wondering if this means he won’t even be on board for the standalone film as an actor, which War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves is developing and helming.

Speaking with USA Today, Affleck said the following about the film:

“[The Batman is] something I’m contemplating. You don’t do it forever, so I want to find a graceful and cool way to segue out of it.”

Ouch. So fans who have been worried about him potentially exiting the DC Extended Universe as a whole may have been right all along. From the sound of it, the future of Affleck’s involvement hasn’t even been close to decided yet.

Should Justice League fail to click with fans and critics, we wouldn’t be surprised if Affleck drops out altogether, leaving the DCEU to figure out a way to deal with his departure. But we’ll have to wait and see.

Perhaps what he really means is that he’s figuring out whether or not that film will be his last. If he truly does want to segue gracefully out of it, it sounds like he’d need to at least end with The Batman.
