Battlestar Galactica Movie Coming From Simon Kinberg For Universal- Hmmm

Yesterday it was announced that we have a Battlestar Galactica movie coming from Simon Kinberg. Universal will finance the BSG movie which will be written and produced by Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Dark Phoenix). Now, whilst I am a fan of the BSG property, I am not in love with Simon Kinberg as a writer, so I have mixed feelings about this. Kinberg will join producer Dylan Clark who has long shepherded the project at the studio, which has attracted filmmakers such as Bryan Singer and Francis Lawrence over the years.

The report comes by way of THR,

Battlestar Galactica is one of the holy grail’s in science fiction,  and I couldn’t be more excited about bringing something new to the franchise, while honoring what’s made it so iconic and enduring,” said Kinberg in a statement. “I’m so grateful that Dylan and my partners at Universal have trusted me with this incredible universe.”

Kinberg of course was heavily involved in shaping Fox’s X-Men Universe including directing the final entry, Dark Phoenix. It would be fair to say I was never a fan of Fox’s X-Men Universe. I also have been pretty critical of other projects Kinberg has been involved in previously. A BSG movie sounds like a good idea, however, is there any life left in Battlestar Galactica? The most recent TV series (2004), itself a remake of the 70’s classic TV show was fantastic for the most part. It’s hard to see how a movie could compare with a character focused show like BSG (2004) was. However the TV was also a visual spectacle that did not seem short on budget.

Let’s just say that my excitement for a BSG was low, and the addition of Kinberg does not help. One would assume we would see familiar character like Adama, Apollo, Starbuck, and the rest. Again, I just can’t see any easy way to make me care about new versions of these characters when the last iteration was so resonant. There is also a rebooted TV series in the works from NBCU (related link above). This could all be a bit too much by the end, but we need to see how things play out.

What do you think about a Battlestar Galactica movie coming from Simon Kinberg? Excited, or worried like I am? Leave your thoughts in the usual spot.
