Kenneth Branagh is one of the most notable directors currently working in the industry. From William Shakespeare’s adaptations of Henry V, Hamlet, and Much Ado About Nothing to mainstream films Thor, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Cinderella, and Murder on the Orient Express, there is basically nothing this actor/director hasn’t turned to box office gold (we like to forget that Artemis Fowl is on this list).
Now Kenneth Branagh turns his sights to a more artsy history film with Belfast.
The film is mostly in black and white, as it explores a boy’s life in Belfast with his family during the tumultuous times of social unrest and music of the late 1960s.
The film stars Caitriona Balfe (Ford v Ferrari, Outlander0, Judi Dench (Skyfall, Notes on a Scandal), Jamie Dornan (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, Fifty Shades of Grey), Ciaran Hinds (The Woman in Black, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), and Jude Hill (Magpie Murders, Rian). Kenneth Branagh also wrote the screenplay.

This film has a lot of potential with a great cast and possibly a good story. Kenneth Branagh usually directs and writes very good stories and the trailer so far indicates it as a film to watch. Not to mention, the film generated some decent buzz from its premieres at the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.
Hopefully, it also generates a certain buzz for the young actor Jude Hill like it did for Christian Bale in 1987’s Empire of the Sun. It’ll be interesting to watch a child’s point of view of The Troubles that started in North Ireland that sent the region into a political quagmire and violence for the next four decades.
Focus Features is set to release Belfast in theaters on Friday, November 12.
