Ben Affleck Leaving Batman Was The Right Thing To Do, As Indicated By His Recent Comments

Ben Affleck is no longer Batman, but it sounds like his leaving the role was the right decision.

I know I’m not alone in my adoration of Ben Affleck’s Batman. The DC Extended Universe may have had some major problems early on, but the Batman wasn’t one of them. Affleck brought a nuance and gravitas to the Caped Crusader that was much needed for the unique interpretation, and his perfect, bulky physique made for the perfect Frank Miller-inspired silhouette. I was even more thrilled at another prospect, however.

Yes, as great as it was to have Ben Affleck as Batman, the thing I was really waiting for was his standalone film. Like many, I was totally ready and onboard to see what his directorial vision would be for The Batman. However, he eventually dropped out of that as director, and before long, he left as the Caped Crusader himself.

In a recent video where he broke down his entire career, Affleck himself gave some insight as to why he stepped away.

Justice League was unfortunately touched by some personal tragedy, and a death in Zack’s family,” Affleck said. “Like, I say, some things sort of work and gel, and sometimes you seem to be having just one problem after another.”

Affleck continued: “I really loved Batman v Superman…I had a good time, I loved Detroit…[After that film,] I sort of had my fill of that. They said, “Do you want to direct and star in a solo Batman movie?” I found that I had kind of just lost my enthusiasm or passion for it. This should really be made by somebody for whom it’s their wildest dream come true. For me it had become something different, and it was clear to me that it was time to move on. But I do have some fond memories, particularly of Batman v Superman, and how exciting that was and how energizing that was, and how much fun we had.”

As much as it pains me to say, this was the right move. In weeks past, Affleck had also indicated that the stress from the film could have led him back to alcohol, which is no good. At the end of the day, film and storytelling are professions you take up as a passion. The moment you lose the passion for it, there’s almost no point in continuing.

Not only would Ben Affleck have suffered during the production of his movie, but the end product likely would have suffered as well. At the end of the day, Warner Bros. and fans need a hit Batman film. If Affleck wasn’t passionate about it, there’s no reason to think that lack of passion wouldn’t affect fan reactions.
