Ben Affleck Talks About Why He Left Batman Live On Jimmy Kimmel

The Ben Affleck/Batman saga has been raging on ever since the veteran actor was first cast in the role, I mean, some fans actually protested outside the White House hoping then President Obama would do something about it. Crazy as foxes they had to be for that.

Then we had some serious fan and critical backlash to Batman V Superman, although most people agreed that Ben Affleck was actually well suited to the role of Batman in the movie. It’s not Affleck’s fault Snyder had him killing enemies and branding people. Though he will likely be most remembered for saying the immortal line “Why did you say that NAME?”

After Justice League flopped though it appeared increasingly likely that Affleck wanted out of Batman, there were rumors upon rumors and yet, officially, he was still playing Batman in the upcoming movie from Matt Reeves. Initially, Affleck was supposed to be directing The Batman with a script co-written by Geoff Johns, so when Reeves took over it seemed increasingly likely that Affleck would leave the role.

Then after much speculation, it was finally announced that Affleck was no longer Batman and the worst kept secret in Hollywood was finally revealed. Since this point, the focus with regards to Batman has been more on who will play the character next and not what happened with Affleck. But, as you can see above Affleck appeared last night on Jimmy Kimmel and spoke for the first time about what went wrong with the movie he was working on and for the first time officially said he was retired as Batman.

Affleck was asked why he has chosen to walk away from the role and said.

“I tried to direct a version of it and worked with a really good screenwriter, but just couldn’t come up with a version – I couldn’t crack it, and so it was time to let someone take a shot at it. They’ve got some really good people.”

Of course, here Affleck is referring to the fact he was set to direct The Batman and was working on a script with Geoff Johns. Though I find it hard to believe they simply couldn’t develop a good Batman story, I could probably dream up about 3 or 4 in the space of an hour if pushed. After being asked to give one final statement about his retirement Affleck turned to the camera and said.

“I’m not Batman!”

There is very rarely any smoke without fire in this industry and the Affleck situation was creating more smoke than a fire at a tire factory for quite some time. All that’s left to discuss now is, who next for the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman and how will they explain the difference whilst keeping continuity with the other DC properties?

Are you happy or sad that Affleck is no longer The Bat, do you buy his story of not being able to crack the script for The Batman? Swoop down into our comments section below and leave your thoughts.
