Bill And Ted Creator On Third Film’s Tone

It’s probably fitting that it’s during the renaissance of Keanu Reeves that we’re finally getting a third Bill and Ted film. It’s a movie that’s been a long time in the making, and one that sounds like it could be a story worth being told. After all, rather than ending up total rock stars, this film features a middle-aged Bill and Ted who, like most people and life, went on to have pretty normal, mundane lives, and have to face it.

With this in mind, some fans were wondering what we could expect the film to be in terms of its tone. co-creator and Bill and Ted Face the Music writer Ed Solomon took to Twitter earlier this week to give fans an answer to this question by comparing the film to the other entries in the franchise.

“Tonally Face The Music is closer to Excellent Adventure than Bogus Journey, but with the weight, and experience, and the life of joys and losses that age brings. The best comedy, to me, is absurdity rooted in human truth. That’s our goal, at least. Did we hit it? Guess we’ll find out.”

While I’m not really sure what to make of that comparison, the way he describes the story, it does feel something akin to Toy Story — a fun ride that has the subtext of something much more mature than we thought possible. And you know what? I’m all for it.

Below is the official synopsis for Bill and Ted Face the Music:

“Following 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and 1991’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, the stakes are higher than ever for William Bill S. Preston Esq. (Winter) and Theodore Ted Logan (Reeves). Yet to fulfill their rock and roll destiny, the now middle-aged best friends set out on a new adventure, when a visitor from the future warns them that only their song can save life as we know it and bring harmony to the universe. Along the way, they will be helped by their families, old friends and a few music legends.”
