Birds Of Prey To Be Rated R, Says Director Cathy Yan

DC seems to be going all in on the dark and gritty nature of a lot of their characters. Most recently, we have seen them go that route with their new DC Universe series, Titans, which shows off all sorts of violence — not to mention the now-infamous line, “F**k Batman.” But is this something that could bleed into the films? Sure, Batman v Superman was dark, but it was still just shy of that R-rating some fans had hoped it would come with.

Well, we may very well get an R-rated film in the DC Extended Universe, after all. While at a summit, Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan confirmed rumors surrounding her movie — that it would be rated R. Unfortunately, Deadline didn’t get a direct quote, but their reporting of the situation was unmistakable. Does this mean the movie will DEFINITELY be R? I’d say no. At the end of the day, it’s up to the suits at Warner Bros., not Yan, and the studio already has a history of corrupting a vision for short-term gain.

But anyways, luckily, that wasn’t all she had to say about the film. We did get some details from the helmer as to how she locked down this coveted gig, to begin with:

“I did my homework. I wouldn’t say it was easy, but it was relatively painless and straightforward. I immediately loved the script and it felt like something I could really do, and it felt very much like my own voice.”

And in regards to the script, she embellished what it was that made her love it so much:

“I could not put the script down, it had so much dark humor to it which a lot of my work does, and there are themes of female empowerment which are so strong and relatable. So I went in with, not with confidence, but at least a sense that I belonged in the room, that somehow magically in terms of timing and luck that this opportunity was open to me and I was definitely going to make the best of it.”

Clearly, it worked for the suits, and hopefully, it’ll work for audiences as well, who will be able to see Margot Robbie reprise her role as Harley Quinn, as well as characters like Cassandra Cain, Huntress, and Black Canary.
