Black Widow: Kevin Feige Chose Against An Origin Story Because He Knew Audiences Expected It

Feige Teases Secret ScarJo Project - Not Related To Black Widow

Why Black Widow isn’t an origin story.

It’s hard not to be a bit cynical about movies. We know they are made for profit, and are made to be as accessible as possible to cast a wide net. This is especially true for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. People like to tout that the MCU is very formulaic. We have team-up movies, but then we have standalone films. In many cases, these standalones act as origin stories for our heroes. So you can’t exactly blame fans for expecting just that for the eventual Black Widow film.

Years passed, and it seemed less and less likely that we’d get a Black Widow standalone film. However, in discussions online, many fans still expected to see Natasha’s origins as the main thrust of the story. As it turns out though, producer and Marvel Studios head thought fans would expect just that. So he pushed for a different story.

“[Kevin Feige] realized that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction,” Black Widow helmer Cate Shortland told Empire. And if you were curious if we’d be seeing more of Florence Pugh’s character post-Black Widow, Shortland pretty much confirmed as much. “And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.”

But when will we actually see Black Widow? While the film is slated for a November 2020 release, we’ll have to wait and see just how that date holds as the pandemic takes its course. If you can believe it, it’s been well over a year since we’ve had an MCU movie — and man, do I feel it.

Personally, I can’t wait to dive back into this world and revisit Johansson’s character at least one more time.
