Legendary film star Rutger Hauer, best known for his role in the sci-fi classic Blade Runner, has passed away. Hauer’s agent, Steve Kenis, confirmed to the media that Hauer passed away after a short illness on July 19th in the Netherlands, and that his funeral was held on Wednesday.
Hauer emerged as a leading man in the 70s after appearing in the Dutch film Turkish Delight, which went on to be nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards. Hauer made his debut in Hollywood when he took the role of terrorist Heymar ‘Wulfgar’ Reinhardt in the Sylvester Stallone, Billy Dee Williams 1981 thriller Nighthawks. Then came his most notable role in American pop culture as Roy Batty, the leader of the gang of outlaw replicants in the Harrison Ford-starring, Ridley Scott film Blade Runner.

In the 80s, Hauer tended to gravitate toward action, fantasy, and horror films like Ladyhawks, Flesh & Blood, and as the horror villain in the original The Hitcher. Possibly his biggest artistic achievement was in the 1988 film The Legend Of The Holy Drinker. The film achieved the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival, which many attributed to Hauer’s performance. Hauer would go on to appear in the original 1990 film Buffy The Vampire Slayer as Lord Lothos.
In 2005, Hauer appeared in the Robert Rodriguez film Sin City as Cardinal Roark and in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins as the corrupt Wayne exec Earle. On the smaller screen, Hauer would appear in HBO’s True Blood, the miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot, and the ABC series Galavant. Throughout his career, Hauer proved with every role just how talented and versatile he was, and his work will continue to live on in the annals of motion picture lore.
