Blue Beetle Tracking For $30M Opening Weekend At Box Office

According to a report by Deadline, Blue Beetle is tracking for a $30M opening weekend haul at the box office.

According to a report by Deadline, Blue Beetle is tracking for a $30M opening weekend haul at the box office. The movie opens on August 18th. It is worth noting that for a super hero movie a $30M opening weekend isn’t that impressive. However it is reported that Blue Beetle had a budget of $120M. Therefore, with that domestic opening (if it happens) you’d guess the movie will turn a profit. Which, is a plus for a DC movie these days frankly.

It’s always possible also that Blue Beetle is a great movie and positive word of mouth drives more business. However, the opposite is also true. Until fans get to see it we don’t know which way it will go?

As Deadline explains below, the Latino angle may be helping Blue Beetle‘s projections.

The Angel Manuel Soto-directed pic is very hot with Latino and Hispanic moviegoers, natch, right now on tracking; the movie’s unaided awareness (that section of polling whereby moviegoers aren’t prompted on upcoming movies, rather name them independently when polled) is soaring above that of Sony’s Gran Turismo. True, this projection right now is lower than the $55M start of The Flash, which didn’t see a huge turnout by its cast to promote, and Shazam: Fury of the Gods‘ $30.1M, but note movies aimed at Hispanic and Latino moviegoers can overindex in their first weekends due to walk-up business. That’s what happened this weekend with The Meg 2: The Trench coming in at the top of expectations with a $30M start and a strong turnout among Hispanic and Latino crowds at 25% per Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak.

One thing that definitely hurt The Flash was the unclear status of the DCEU transitioning into the DCU. Blue Beetle was designed and greenlit under the previous regime for the DCEU. However comments from those involved since have hinted that the movie could instead become the first of the DCU. To be honest that feels to me like a bluff to get folks interested. Blue Beetle would have to do much better than expected for Gunn and Safran to declare it the first DCU project I’m sure.

What is also clear is that marketing for Superman: Legacy will need to be on point. It has to present this is a new rebooted universe and one that fans are interested to see in action. WB and DC Studios simply cannot afford for Legacy to be another bomb. However, in my opinion, there is already a sense of hype around Legacy that hasn’t been there for any other DC film recently, perhaps outside of The Batman.

What do you think of the news Blue Beetle is tracking for a $30M opening weekend haul at the box office? Thoughts below as always.
