Bond Producer Doesn’t Think James Bond Should Be Female

As the years have gone on, fans have looked to the future of the James Bond franchise. He’s been a pretty stereotypical British white dude for decades, and many think that it’s time to change it up. Countless people have been pushing for a person of color (namely, Idris Elba) or even a woman to take on the role of James Bond (or Jane Bond or whatever). But is any of that possible?

We are apparently seeing hints of that in the next film, which sees James Bond retired and a woman of color taking on the 007 moniker…but what about Bond himself? Well, Barbara Broccoli, producer and keeper of the James Bond character, has some very specific thoughts.

“He can be of any color, but he is male,” Broccoli told Variety. “I believe we should be creating new characters for women — strong female characters. I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.”

So, Idris Elba maybe, and Emily Blunt, hard pass. While I can see this being a bit disappointing for some fans, I do think Broccoli had the right attitude about preferring to create strong original characters for females. It just becomes a question of whether or not they follow through with that idea.

But it does sound like they are looking to change things up.

“You think of him as being from Britain or the Commonwealth, but Britain is a very diverse place,” producer Michael G. Wilson told the outlet. And he’s right. Just look at British TV and film, and you can see that they actually tend to be a lot more diverse with their casting than a lot of U.S. productions. So there’s a lot more wiggle room there than they’re often given credit for.
