Brandon Sanderson’s Rhythm Of War May Be The Longest Entry In The Stormlight Archive Yet

The end is near for Stormlight Archive 4, which is titled Rhythm of War. This novel will be the penultimate volume of the first arc of the 10-volume Stormlight Archive. By the end of the novel, we will be fast approaching the end of the struggle that started off with The Way of Kings back in 2010. It’s almost fitting that this comes roughly ten years after author Brandon Sanderson started this journey. But how is his progress in the story?

Sanderson himself took to social media to share his progress on Stormlight Archive 4: Rhythm of War, as he tends to do. At first, his news may come across mildly startling. But fret not, it sounds like the prolific writer has the case in-hand.

“I’m a tad behind where I wanted to be on the last draft of Stormlight 4, but that shouldn’t delay the release,” Sanderson wrote. “Currently 800 manuscript pages left to edit. (140k words — 30% of the book.) I will post daily updates next week.”

When last he checked in earlier this week, Sanderson indicated he was 70% through the fifth draft of the novel. Based on the update, it doesn’t sound like he’s made much progress since then. But, as indicated in the tweet, this won’t affect the November release date of the book.

If nothing else, we can consider this a good thing, as we will now be getting daily updates in the next week. Presumably, this will last until the novel itself is finally finished. But the interesting part of this whole thing to me is the length. As stated in the tweet, 140,000 words roughly equates to 30% of the novel. Simple math indicates Rhythm of War may hit 466,000 words.

This makes it over 10,000 words longer than Oathbringer, which is already the longest entry thus far at 455,000 words. So, if you were somehow worried Rhythm of War wouldn’t tide you over…it sounds like it’ll fit the bill.

Of course, that’s not the final word count. But even assuming that Sanderson cuts a good chunk of words, it does sound like Rhythm of War will at least be as long as its predecessor.
