Brie Larson Down To Play Samus Aran In A Metroid Movie

Could Brie Larson play bounty hunter Samus Aran?

I think we’re long overdue for a Metroid movie. It’s a beloved Nintendo video game franchise and features one of the first big female heroines in the medium. Back in the early 2000s, I would have been stoked to see Charlize Theron take on the role of the lead Samus Aran, but I think that ship has sadly sailed. So, who else could play everyone’s favorite space-faring bounty hunter? Artist Boss Logic had an idea.

Why not turn to Captain Marvel star Brie Larson for the role? Larson certainly has the look for the character, and she’s no stranger to space-set action films. So Boss Logic did what he did best — he put together a killer mock-up of how Larson would look as Samus Aran in a film poster.

What’s more is that Larson herself retweeted the image, urging someone out there to make this happen.

As you may know, Brie Larson is also an avid Nintendo fan. In fact, a couple of years ago, Larson dressed up in a Zero Suit Samus outfit for Halloween. She’s even explicitly stated in the past that she wants to play the character. In terms of look and overall acting skill, I have to say, we could do much worse than Larson.

Personally, I’m just curious how they’d tell a Metroid story on film. Team Ninja tried their best to do a cinematic story in Other M, but ultimately, that ended up betraying the essence of the franchise, which revolves around isolation and alien locales. To me, this means an ideal Metroid film would feature Brie Larson mostly alone exploring some planet. I’m sure it can be done, but can it be done in a way that doesn’t feel like an adult-oriented hard sci-fi tale?

Nothing against those, but they don’t exactly scream the Nintendo brand and could ultimately confuse audiences. I can’t help but think that if Nintendo did go for a Metroid film, they’d lean harder into the epic space opera direction — which is counter to the essence of the property.

Regardless, Larson is an interesting choice, but likely not the only one who could take on the role. I could honestly even see Alice Eve play the bounty hunter.

What about you? Who would be your ideal Samus Aran in a Metroid film? Sound off down below!
