Bumblebee: Dylan O’Brien To Voice Titular Autobot

I’m not gonna lie. When we first reported about Bumblebee actually getting a voice in the upcoming Bumblebee standalone film, I didn’t actually think that meant he’d be getting a voice. As in the other films, I assumed it had more to do with his means of communicating through creative means, perhaps even apart from using the radio.

But, it looks like my assumptions are completely wrong, as Bumblebee will indeed be getting an actual voice. The man to take on the task is none other than Maze Runner actor Dylan O’Brien. But what was it about this guy that made him the right actor for the job? Speaking with IGN, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura gave his thoughts on the matter:

“Dylan has that great quality in his voice of youthful exuberance, and also sort of trustworthiness. I think those are the two qualities that we wanted Bumblebee to have.”

That wasn’t all the producer had to say. He also discussed why a voice is actually necessary for this character:

“Since we were approaching this as an origin story, we felt that it was appropriate that you got to hear his voice. That’s the simple logic that we employed. The longer term implication of that is different. But the short-term implication of that is, since we really are resetting the mythology, essentially, of who Bumblebee is. And so, that seemed to us to be the appropriate, to get the chance to hear what he sounds like.”

I like the sound of this, mostly since I never loved these films and only enjoyed that first one as a typical popcorn flick. If this movie ends up being really good, why not follow it up with sequels that gleefully contradict everything that came before it? It’s not like we’d be missing anything, right?
