Candyman Pop-Up Challenges You To Say His Name Five Times

Candyman The Experience

In anticipation of the upcoming remake of Candyman, the studios Universal Pictures and Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures offer an interactive experience for Chicagoans.

The two-day pop-up event is this Saturday and Sunday, August 21 and 22, from noon to 8 p.m. at Pioneer Court, 401 Michigan Avenue, in Chicago.

The Candyman “Say it. I Dar You!” challenge is an interactive pop-up experience that invites guests to enter a dark room where they are challenged to stand in front of a mirror to repeat the name “Candyman” five times.

Of course, in the fictional Candyman urban legend, the supernatural serial killer would suddenly appear to all those who chanted his name. For the pop-up experience, it is not known at this time what the hook hand killer would do to the guests in the darkroom.

Here’s the official synopsis:

For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini-Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror.

In the present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Metten II of Watchman, Us) and his partner, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris of WandaVision, If Beale Street Could Talk), move into a luxury loft in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials.

With Anthony’s painting career on the brink of stalling, a chance encounter with a Cabrini-Green old-timer (Colman Domingo of Zola, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) exposes Anthony to the horrific true story behind Candyman. Anxious to maintain his status in the Chicago art world, and spurred on by his white art dealer, Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh inspiration for paintings, unknowingly opening a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifying wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.

Candyman is only playing in theaters on Friday, August 27.
