Captain Marvel Filming To Start Soon (In An Unexpected Location)

Marvel’s MCU is deep into phase 3, we’re mere days away from the launch of Thor: Ragnarok, and only a few months from Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War — each a highly, highly anticipated film (obviously). However, one of the final Phase 3 MCU films, Captain Marvel, has been quietly inching toward a shooting date.

Brie Larson’s role as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel is a big deal, not only because she’s Marvel’s first female lead in an MCU film, but also because many expect this movie to point the way toward Phase 4, while also setting up the next iteration of the Avengers (and you know that Captain Marvel is a key player — she’s a captain!)

Today we’re learning from casting site, My Entertainment World, some important details about Captain Marvel’s production status:

  • Captain Marvel
  • Category: Feature Film
  • Genre: Action / Adventure / Sci-Fi
  • Shoot Date: February, 2018
  • Location: Los Angeles, CA

Interestingly, while many Marvel films have been shooting in Atlanta, this production is slated for Los Angeles. The choice to shoot in L.A. could result in a much different looking film from Avengers: Infinity War, Ant Man and the Wasp, and other Georgia-based shoots, due to Southern California’s “golden light.” Captain Marvel is the first film to shoot primarily in California since 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Given that Captain Marvel will appear in Avengers 4, which started filming in August (after the D23 Expo), the choice to shoot in L.A. might be unexpected. However, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Captain Marvel was intended for Atlanta, but the state of California offered Marvel $20 million in tax breaks and incentives.

Synopsis:

After encountering the Kree hero Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers was accidentally subjected to otherworldly radiation that transformed her into a superhuman warrior. Calling herself Ms. Marvel, she established herself as one of Marvel’s most powerful and prominent heroes both as a solo heroine and as a member of the Avengers. Recently, she has adopted the mantle of Captain Marvel for herself.
