Captain Marvel: Jude Law On Being Carol Danvers’ Mentor

Marvel Studios has always been good about revering older versions of their superheroes in their movies. In Ant-Man, it was revealed that Hank Pym (the original Ant-Man in the comics) was indeed the original Ant-Man; in Black Panther, we get the impression that Ulysses Klaue was pretty much T’Chaka’s arch-nemesis during his reign as protector of Wakanda; finally, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it’s revealed that Yondu used to run around with a bunch of other characters in a similar group — one that would be recognized by comic book readers as the original Guardians of the Galaxy lineup.

In short, they do a damn good job of honoring the history of the comics without feeling the need to actually wade through each iteration of the superheroes in chronological order. Such is the case with Captain Marvel, which will include the character of Mar-Vell alongside Carol Danvers, both of whom take on the name of Captain Marvel in the comics.

In the upcoming film, Jude Law will be playing Mar-Vell, the commander of Starforce, and as he revealed to EW, he took Carol Danvers on as a bit of a pet project:

“These extraordinary powers she has, he sees them as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control. That’s a motif throughout the piece, the element of learning to control one’s emotions and to use your powers wisely.”

Seems like a natural direction to take things, considering Carol will be getting her powers in a freak accident (assuming they stick relatively close to the comic book canon, but we’ll see). It’s not like these abilities come with instructions attached, but as far as we know, this movie won’t be a typical origin story, so I can’t help but wonder what power ceiling Mar-Vell will help Carol break. I’m still wondering if Mar-Vell will meet his end in this film at the hands of some enemy or if he’ll turn bad, á la Ego in Guardians 2.

In the EW piece, we get two shots of Law as Mar-Vell — one with him STANDING ALONGSIDE CAROL, and another with him WEARING HIS CAPTAIN MARVEL SUIT.
