Captain Marvel Will Show Us how Nick Fury Lost His Eye

I think we take it for granted just how good Marvel Studios has gotten at the whole de-aging thing. It was only several minutes after watching that Captain Marvel special look trailer last week that I remembered, “Oh yeah, Samuel L. Jackson is older than he looks in it, isn’t he?” Yes, yes he is. Roughly 20 years older, in fact. This is the youngest we have seen Fury in the MCU, and with it, there is bound to be some revelations.

But what kind of revelations can we actually expect? Well, it sounds like we’ll actually be getting the backstory of the one thing I didn’t want to see anything for: Nick Fury’s eye. Speaking with ET Online, the actor mentioned that before jumping into some of the other things we’ll get to know about Fury in the 1990s:

“You’ll see, specifically, the origin of what happened to his eye. You’ll find out that he does have a family, that’s referenced. You don’t see them, but they are referenced in another way. There are things we talk about in his backstory that haven’t been talked about before — where he’s from, what he’s done. There are times when he actually, humanly reacts to things with fear and awe, instead of the stone face that he normally has, before he learns to control his emotions in another way.

We don’t talk about none of his war experiences. We talk about him being in the war, leaving the war, being a spy and some of the things he did when he was a spy that got him to this particular place. So, we get more of a backstory, and we get more of what turns him into this person that you originally meet in Iron Man.”

Okay, so about 95% of that I like. Quite a lot. I’m all about fleshing out the backstory of this guy. I’d like to understand him a little bit more other than the fact that his grandpa used to man elevators back in the day. But man do I hate it when writers feel the need to fill in every little crevice.

Fury losing his eye was something mentioned offhandedly in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and honestly, that was plenty enough for me. Hopefully, if they do actually show it, it’ll be mostly consistent with what Fury’s said in previous movies. Then again, so long as it’s interesting, it doesn’t matter too much, does it?
