Disney’s live-action remakes of its popular animated films gets put into overdrive this year with not one, not two, but three releases! While many people associate Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent with being the start of this trend I would remind people of the 1994 Jungle Book and 1996 101 Dalmatians films as the first experiments with this idea. The latter starred Glen Close and got a sequel. Fast forward today and we have had successful remakes of The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella with Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King all coming this year.
The first movie to hit will be about the floppy-eared flying elephant which hits on the 29th of March. The film is directed by Tim Burton and stars Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny Devito, and Eva Green. Check out their Character Posters:
The trailers have shown us that this will have that Tim Burton feel to it, and why not? It’s a dark tale about corrupt businessmen that make their money off of animal cruelty. That could lead to some people wondering if this was made to be social commentary based on the fairly recent history of the big Circuses here in America. What I do know is that Burton has a great eye for visuals and a great feeling for tone. I am not the biggest an of classic Disney movies, but this and the other two releases for this year could find me in a theater seat with my family.
