Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina Is A Wicked Good Time

If you were going into Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina expecting an homage to the original Sabrina the Teenage Witch ABC TGIF series from the late ’90s, you would be dead wrong. On the contrary, this series would probably give the Melissa Joan Hart-starring classic nightmares for a month.

Netflix’s latest series, which focuses on half-witch, half-mortal Sabrina Spellman having to decide between her two worlds, is based entirely on the Archie Horror comics which were first published in 2014. The comics were written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (who created both this series and Riverdale) and feature a much darker tone, where witches answer to their true god, Satan, and promote the way of the Dark Lord. Taking directly from the comics, Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina presents the Spellman family, where sisters Hilda and Zelda prepare their young niece Sabrina for her 16th birthday, which falls on Halloween, where she is expected to devote herself to the service of the Beast. However, young Sabrina isn’t ready to choose her witch word over her mortal world and Satan-worshipping and diabolical plotting ensues.

If you’re able to put aside any religious affiliation you may have and simply open your mind to the entertainment value of the series, the show grabs your attention from the very first scenes. The entire cast plays off each other extremely well, bringing a humanity to these “gifted” characters. Even changes in phrases, like saying “Praise Satan” or “Satan Bless You,” roll off the tongue so easily for the cast, as if it were something they have said for years.

Miranda Otto and Lucy Davis play off each other exquisitely as aunts Zelda and Hilda, while Kiernan Shipka’s Sabrina gradually evolves throughout the series from naive teenage girl to emotionally-driven young woman weathering the storm of chaos that heads her way. It is a well-balanced story of dark humor, family devotion, and an undesired fate, all revolving around a coven existing in the small, spooky town of Greendale.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a worthy addition to your Netflix viewing, especially on this All Hallows Eve. If you’re up for it, add the series to your queue and enjoy the wicked ride.
