Christopher Nolan Blasts Warner Bros. For Their HBO Max Film Releases

Christopher Nolan has some harsh words for Warner Bros. and HBO Max!

In an unprecedented move last week, Warner Bros. dropped a bombshell on the film industry announcing that they were going to be moving it’s entire seventeen film 2021 slate and move it to their streaming service, HBO Max. They are all going to debut on the service on the same day that they are to be released in whatever theaters are allowed to be open.

This decision has sent shockwaves through the film industry. Even going as far as affecting Cinemark and AMC Theaters stock. There are many stars, producers, directors, and representatives who are livid with WB’s decision. One filmmaker who’s passion for his love of theatrical release is without question is Christopher Nolan. He has had a relationship with WB since Insomnia back in 2002. He is also the director of the often celebrated Dark Knight trilogy.

Well, we’ll see how much longer that relationship lasts after his statement to The Hollywood Reporter about WB’s decision. “Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service,” said Nolan.

“Warner Bros. had an incredible machine for getting a filmmaker’s work out everywhere, both in theaters and in the home, and they are dismantling it as we speak. They don’t even understand what they’re losing. Their decision makes no economic sense, and even the most casual Wall Street investor can see the difference between disruption and dysfunction.”

I myself also think that this was a very bad decision to take ALL of their films to HBO Max. I do understand the need to move films that were going to be released soon. But I do believe that they should have made a decision each quarter as to what they should do. As things are always changing. I think that there would still be hope for some films in the fall. It’s irresponsible for them to make such a decision that impacts so many. Nolan and others have a right to be furious.
