As the title says, a Conan the Barbarian show is coming to Netflix, eventually. This is truly the golden age of fantasy with how many top drawer fantasy books are being adapted for streaming services. Now the tales of Conan from author Robert E. Howard are next.
Deadline yesterday revealed that Netflix is putting a Conan show into development. The project from Fredrik Malmberg and Mark Wheeler’s Pathfinder Media, is the first in a deal between Netflix and Conan Properties International, owned by Malmberg’s Cabinet Entertainment. The pact gives Netflix the exclusive option to acquire rights to the Conan literary library and develop works across TV and film, both live-action and animated.
This of course plays into Netflix current strategy of buying up known IP’s. Netflix has already had success from The Witcher and will hope Conan can replicate that success. Rivals Amazon are developing two massive fantasy properties. Both The Lord of the Rings and The Wheel of Time are filming their first seasons right now. I’m not sure if Conan has the same appeal as those fantasy properties? However, there is still an avid fan base for Howard’s works. Like The Witcher, I would expect Conan to be geared towards a more adult audience. However Amazon’s shows I expect to be a little more geared for families.

For fantasy fans, like me, this is a great time to be alive. I just hope this fantasy era is as well put together as the superhero genre currently is. That remains to be seen, because there’s no guarantee how good each of these fantasy shows will be. All I, and other fantasy fans can do is hope, hope that these properties can be realized on screen in a way that doesn’t feel cheap or cheesy, a plague that has ensnared many fantasy adaptations of the past.
