D-Generation X Is The First Inductee In The WWE Hall Of Fame Class Of 2019

Are you ready?… I said ARE. YOU. READY?!!

In the late ’90s, the WWE, then known as the WWF, made the decision to have a much more edgy tone. Instead of catering to young kids and parents, the company decided to direct their content toward those in high school and college. They decided to feature character gimmicks that were a little less Superman and Captain America and a little more Punisher and Deadpool. They gave this campaign a title: WWF Attitude. Today, fans refer to that time (1997 – 2002, give or take) as The Attitude Era. It was this period in time that gave berth to such names as “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Rock, “Y2J” Chris Jericho and “Mankind” Mick Foley. Also born in that era was one of the most controversial, influential and vulgarly entertaining stables in the history of professional wrestling. They were anti-establishment. They were against any form of authority. They were degenerates and proud of it.

Their name was D-Generation X.

Originally formed by the icon, “The Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels, Triple H and Chyna, then growing to include X-Pac, “Bad Ass” Billy Gunn and Road Dogg Jessie James, D-Generation X (or simply DX) began the “it’s cool to be bad” angle. No longer was it about being squeaky-clean and liked by kids. Now, it was about taking a stand against the repressive boss Vince McMahon and his Corporation, and DX did exactly that. They perfected the “suck it” phrase, adding on the “x” double-arm crotch chop while saying it. They would mock their opponents with sexual innuendo and question their manhood. They spit in the face of Sgt. Slaughter and shoved Vince McMahon’s face into The Big Show’s ass… literally. They got female fans to flash their tops during events and once wore Santa-themed thongs in the ring. Their attitudes were a blend of Rage Against The Machine and The Beastie Boys for pro wrestling.

After over twenty years since their formation, the iconic and incomparable D-Generation X will be forever ingrained in the pantheon of sports-entertainment. The night before this year’s WrestleMania, the WWE will place this ground-breaking group in their Hall of Fame, and rightfully so. This crew set the bar for future rebellious characters in professional wrestling and they deserve to have their green and black banner hoisted up alongside the greats in wrestling history.

And if you’re not down with that, we’ve got two words for ya…
