Folks, here’s my Daredevil: Born Again review for S2E05. It was an artistically brilliant episode, there’s a big ‘however’ though I will get to. Sorry this is a day late, but it was late last night before I watched this and typed it up. Therefore, I figured I would just schedule it for today. As always this episode review is SPOILER Free. However, I will discuss events of previous episodes assuming you’ve seen them, or were never going to watch them.
I’ve seen some fans online rate this episode as their favourite. I think for me, that’s still Episode 4, for now. But this was a great episode full of emotion and drama. I’ll describe how the episode plays out without spoilers so you get a feel.
Flashbacks
This episode features flashbacks to Season 1 of Daredevil. Except, these are scenes that were never shot for Daredevil Season 1. They are additional and treated like they were deleted scenes we never got to see. The flashbacks are colour graded to match the original as well as having a full screen aspect ratio. So you will see the aspect ratio literally change between flashbacks and current timeline. Artistically it is very impressive and it also allows fans to get time with some old characters who are no longer with us.

These flashbacks for characters help define the emotions and choices we see our current characters make in the current timeline. It really does link up very well and it feels like you are watching Daredevil flashbacks.
I’m not getting into the context of how these flashbacks match the current events, but for it worked really well.
I’ll shout out big performances from D’Onofrio in this episode and Michael Gandolfini. Both of them smashed the task here. There’s also some really good scenes between Daredevil and Bullseye (as you’d expect based on here last week ended) and Matt and some old show friends.
Really, very good folks. Check it out.
The However
However, as brilliant as the flashbacks and the return of some old faces were, they have also ignited a debate online. You see the vast majority of fans that came from Daredevil were so in love with the flashback scenes looks and aspect ratio, it made then complain about the current choices.
There are also characters no longer in the show that fans now see as a huge gap in what made that show work. Again, I’m treading lightly here, but I can understand where some of the fans are coming from on this.
I do think old Daredevil looked better. It also looked better in full screen aspect ratio and some characters that didn’t make the transition, are missed. I won’t let this effect my grading though. Instead, I applaud the directors for being brave enough to pull this off. Maybe they agree with the fans and this is the message Disney needs to change it for Season 3 (already filming now)?
Yet, having things look like Born Again looks does not dramatically effect my enjoyment of the new show. I’m okay with the changes even if I prefer the OG. Disney cannot like this being the major talking point of a great episode though and it is.
GRADE: A
I almost went A+ two weeks in a row. However, I just think the action scenes last week were honestly brilliant and this is that kind of show. I would say however, this is the episode that is more likely to get the Emmy nods if they come. There’s little action and the focus is on the drama at hand. If there is a grade between A and A+ I’m unaware of it. So…
If I go 1-10, then Episode 4 was 9.5/10 and Episode 5 was a 9/10, if that helps?
As always, let me know what you think of my review for Daredevil: Born Again S2E05, or leave your own thought son the episode below.
