Daredevil Writer Thought The Netflix Series Was Too Big To Fail

This past week was a sad one for many Marvel/Netflix fans. We’d already seen smaller titans like Luke Cage and Iron Fist crumble, but almost without warning, it was announced that Daredevil would also be canceled alongside its Defenders brethren.

It was a big shock to fans. Sure, we’d heard some stats regarding the diminishing returns each new season of these shows faced, but given how well received Daredevil Season 3 was, it felt like this was the flagship show that could really continue into the future. If you felt that way too, you weren’t alone. Speaking with io9, one of the show’s writers, Tamara Becher-Wilkinson expressed her own shock.

“The reviews were so overwhelmingly positive that I thought there was no way they would cancel it. I don’t know how well it does on Netflix or anything like that…[but] it was surprising to me they would cancel something that was so well received. I thought it was too big to fail.”

As surprised and saddened by this as I was, this isn’t something I’d call an “unbelievable” move by Netflix. While the streaming service used to be the place where shows seemed guaranteed to live long lives, in the recent year or so, they’ve been pretty brutal about the shows they actually let go on. Even fan favorites like American Vandal just a couple months back, and last year, it nixed its most expensive show at the time The Get Down, in spite of its positive reception.

While Netflix generally doesn’t share their numbers, it has become increasingly clear in recent months that overall views do, in fact, matter, and the simple reality is that these shows just weren’t doing well enough to go on, no matter how well they were received.
