Enthusiasm for the X-Men franchise seems to be at an all-time low. And why wouldn’t it be? X-Men: Apocalypse was universally considered to be painfully mediocre and Disney now owns the X-Men property once again, meaning that we’re counting the days before we can see these guys pop up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, despite hopping into the fan-favorite storyline, “The Dark Phoenix Saga,” not a lot of folks are too pumped by what the future holds.
In fact, it looks like this lack of enthusiasm is bleeding into the box office tracking, and according to THR, it’s on course to open at around $50 million. For reference, X-Men: Apocalypse took in $65.7 million in its opening weekend, and X-Men: Days of Future Past $90.8 million. As it turns out, this isn’t just one of the lowest openings it could get, it’s literally THE lowest opening in its long history, including the first X-Men in 2000, which made $54.5 million!

Of course, we’ll have to wait and see where tracking settles as the film’s June 7 release approaches, but it’s not looking amazing for the flick. This is more than a little disappointing, as he was a long-time writer and producer Simon Kinberg’s first time in the director’s chair. We can only hope the movie itself ends up being a good one, otherwise, it’ll be perceived as a huge miss for fans.
