Rocketman: Taron Egerton Reacts To Comparisons To Bohemian Rhapsody, Takes Shot At Bryan Singer

While musical biopics are often pretty solid hits in the business, but I don’t really think even the most optimistic person out there would have known that Bohemian Rhapsody would hit as well as it did. Yes, it does chronicle the origins of one of the biggest rock bands of all time, but the movie went on to be a worldwide sensation, taking in $903 million worldwide. Those are superhero movie and blockbuster numbers — and it was all for a film that cost $52 million to make.

Now, later this year, we’ll be getting another musical biopic, Rocketman — this time chronicling Elton John, one of the greatest musical talents of our time. Given the flamboyant nature and overall influential nature of the subject. Rocketman star Taron Egerton was recently asked about the comparisons to the Rami Malek-starring film, and here’s what he had to say.

“I’m proud that we’re mentioned in the same breath. That film has been such a phenomenon, and rightly so. I can’t remember who did that who finished it off.”

In the interview itself, that last line is said very tongue-in-cheek and followed up with laughter from the audience. For those who don’t know, director Bryan Singer was canned from the production of Bohemian Rhapsody partway through, and Dexter Fletcher was hired to finish up the movie…and Fletcher himself is responsible entirely for directing Rocketman. That’s not even to mention the fact that both Fletcher and Egerton worked together on Eddie the Eagle…so it’s clear that was meant as a way to boost up Fletcher, potentially slighting Singer in the process.
