Datamining Shows Disney+ Is Getting A New Group Watch Feature

It looks as though Disney+ is getting a new Group Watch feature. The folks over at Disney Plus Informer have been doing some datamining and found evidence tucked away in the code about this upcoming feature. Code was added to Disney+ on August 28th which clearly evidences this upcoming feature. Group Watch will allow users to watch a show or movie together and chat while it plays. Initially it seems like Disney+ Group Watch will only be available through PC, or Mobile devices. This makes sense as the functionality required is pre built-in on the likes of games consoles anyway.

The Group Watch feature also has a pin-code feature, presumably to keep kids out from groups set to adult only. However this could also add weight to the rumors we shared recently that an adult/mature section of Disney+ might be on the way internationally? You can catch that story in the related section below. The Group Watch feature appears to be open to anyone, though, those with no Disney+ sub would be prompted to take one up to join in. Both text chat and emoji’s are available to be used within the session. Kids profiles will have the ability to create a session disabled. Therefore, there’s less risk for kids using Disney+ unsupervised and randomly sending out invites to other users.

Disney+ is getting a new Group Watch feature

Further details show that you can only be present in one Group Watch at a time from your profile. As for when this might be used, I think we could see a lot of use for this in the serialized content from Disney+. Fans or Journo’s like us tuning in to watch the latest MCU or Marvel show and taking notes and reacting, possibly even with fellow fans? A neat feature and something that the likes of Amazon and Netflix has the capability for, but haven’t used. Is this the premium technical feature that sets Disney+ alight? Not for me, I would find very limited use of this Group Watch personally, but that’s just me.

If you want to check out a really cool tech feature I dreamed up for Disney+, then you can find an article all about it Here. The idea of custom playlists is for me far more attractive than Group Watch. However, it’s early days for Disney+, and I do hope Disney keep innovating what streaming means for the subscriber. With the competition out there from Amazon and Netflix, Disney needs to capitalize on their franchises. However, there are a ton of ideas that could be implemented on a technical level also.
