Dave Filoni Promoted To Chief Creative Officer At Lucasfilm

Some big Star Wars news as Dave Filoni has been promoted to chief creative officer at Lucasfilm. Not just a change of title for Filoni, as he will now be involved in all creative projects at a far earlier stage than he used to. Filoni was already consulting on all projects but not normally until quite a bit of development had already happened. Now Filoni will be involved right from the initial concept. This, in theory, may help to avoid as many planned projects at Lucasfilm not progressing beyond a certain point.

For now, Kathleen Kennedy remains Lucasfilm president and that will likely remain the case until her contract is up in 2024. After that, I honestly think Kennedy will step away and retire. Having Filoni already established as a creative force across everything will smooth that transition when it comes. I don’t see Filoni becoming president yet, but whoever does setup in will at least have Filoni there from day one. Here are Filoni’s own comments on this promotion..

“Now I’m what’s called chief creative officer of Lucasfilm,” Filoni tells Vanity Fair, which places him into the development process much earlier and in a much more expansive capacity than his previous advisory duties. “In the past, in a lot of projects I would be brought into, I would see it after it had already developed a good ways.”

“In this new role, it’s opened up to basically everything that’s going on,” Filoni says. “When we’re planning the future of what we’re doing now, I’m involved at the inception phase.”

“I’m not telling people what to do,” Filoni says. “But I do feel I’m trying to help them tell the best story that they want to tell. I need to be a help across the galaxy here, like a part of a Jedi Council almost.” He described his responsibilities as understanding the intent of the filmmakers and being a resource to them, based on his mentorship under Lucas himself, and his years spent steering The Clone WarsRebels, and Ahsoka. “Literally, hours now of Star Wars storytelling I have done,” he said, before pausing to rethink his syntax. “See…I even phrased that like Yoda.”

“To truly help filmmakers, it was really important for me to experience it firsthand,” he says. “I can also lend a perspective on the challenges that telling these stories will present. I feel more capable of actually being helpful outside of just saying, ‘Well, Jedi are like this, and Sith are like this…’”

Good, or Bad for Star Wars?

It remains to be seen what happens from here next? Overall I like Filoni’s work on the whole, always have done. Yet, I’ve also seen many mistakes, or shall we say, ideas and takes I didn’t think worked. I do think Filoni’s animated background means his live-action work always looks cinematic. However, I do think he needs to work on his direction with actors and his dialogue writing. Sometimes in Ahsoka especially, I felt like i was watching a live-action show with animated depth. Not to anger animation fans, but I mean animation designed for kids as opposed to adults.

There’s no change to what we know is in development, including Filoni’s own movie and several others. Though, I never count on a Star Wars film until the day filming begins.

What do you think of this Star Wars news? Are you please Dave Filoni has been promoted to chief creative officer at Lucasfilm? Or, are you perhaps displeased with this development? Thoughts below as always.
