David F. Sandberg Shows You Lighting And VFX Tips | Today In Happy

Today in Happy: the weekdaily column where I find positive bits of news from around the web. In this challenging time, it’s nice to highlight some positive stuff going on in the world. Sometimes they’ll be film or geek-related. Sometimes not. But they’ll always skew toward happy. Today’s piece revolves around filmmaker David F. Sandberg.

For those who don’t know, David F. Sandberg is the director of DC’s Shazam!, but he also has his roots in short filmmaking. He may have hit it big with projects like Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation, but he’s never far from his roots. Every so often, you can check out his ponysmasher YouTube channel to see shorts he works on from time-to-time.

The latest short he posted was one called “Shadowed,” where a woman is being tormented by a shadow. But that isn’t the only content Sandberg likes to share with viewers. He also likes to share behind-the-scenes content. In the past we’ve seen him break down how test screenings work, and we’ve even seen him break down a scene from Shazam!. However, with his latest video, he breaks down “Shadowed” in all its glory.

Interestingly enough, the “making of” video is roughly six times longer than the actual “Shadowed” short, but it’s packed full of great nuggets. Check it out down below!

The video really dives deep into the process. First off, it’s fun to see just how low-key everything was during production. He shows how he and his wife, actress Lotta Losten, only shot a couple of hours a day, which highlights all that can be done in a limited time frame. He then delves into basic lighting and the strategies he used for the short as a whole, which are damn informative. It almost makes me want to go and shoot something else right now.

And then he goes off the deep end with the visual effects. It becomes very clear just how knowledgeable Sandberg is. He rose up from the world of indie filmmaking, and it shows based on how much of a jack-of-all trades he is. It also drives home how much of filmmaking is just figuring it out as you go along.

Regardless, if you’re someone who enjoys making shorts in their spare time, or are someone who aspires to be a filmmaker, you can do worse than this as a film school.
