DC Films Insider Says Studio Is Open To Making R-Rated Superhero Movies

You can’t say Warner Bros doesn’t listen. On the heels of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, they heard cries against the “dark and joyless” criticism, so they took to the editing bays and modified Suicide Squad accordingly. Soon afterwards, they flew a whole mess of movie sites to the set of Justice League and showed off some early footage, again showing off that they’re taking fans’ opinions seriously. Over the course of the past couple years, we’ve seen a resurgence of hard-R films like Deadpool, John Wick, and Logan, which were huge successes on relatively small budgets. This is something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the likes of DC Films.

According to a report from TheWrap, they’re even open to making an R-rated film in the DC universe. Here’s what the outlet’s insider had to say:

“One hundred percent yes. With the right character(s).”

While we’re sure many minds went instantly to Batman, we think there are plenty of other characters who would be better suited to such a rating. Gotham City Sirens isn’t a bad option, but in addition to that, if DC could figure out a way to make a Lobo film, that would also be the way to go.

Of course, we have to address the big elephant in the room. It can’t be ignored that while Warner Bros has shown that they’re “receptive” to what an audience is saying, they also seem to be diagonosing their films with the wrong problem. For example, Batman v Superman’s theatrical cut had problems that were much bigger than its “dark and joyless” tone, and had its narrative been less muddled, audiences wouldn’t have had a problem with the tone (just look at how well Logan is doing). Similarly, I hope they don’t begin to think that “if a film is rated R it’ll do well,” because that’s not why Logan and Deadpool worked at all.

What do you think of this new report? Is this a good thing that WB is open to R-rated superhero films, or do you see it as another trend for them to chase? Let us know your thoughts down below!
