DC: J.K. Simmons Still Contractually Obligated To Play Gordon Again

For the most part, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a solid rock. Sure, there tend to be some changes here and there over the years, and there have been a few actors and directors who have petered out, but on the whole, we’ve never really doubted the universe’s future existence. The same can’t be said for the DC Extended Universe, which after getting off to a rocky start with Man of Steel, kept on tumbling downhill with Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, and finally, Justice League.

The question fans always have is what this means for characters going forward, especially thoughts who showed up in that latter film, the only one in the bunch that was a box office failure. More specifically, what will happen to J.K. Simmons’ Commissioner Gordon? Recently, the actor expressed his optimism that he’d return, and in a recent interview with Den of Geek, he reiterated this optimism, going on to say that he’s contractually obligated to return in what appears to be one more film.

“I hope to do more Gordon and, on paper, I’m committed to doing more Gordon. It’s just a question of which film it’ll be in, whether it’s The Batman or another Justice League, or another DC universe film when we will see Gordon again. But I’m optimistic that that will happen again.”

So, from the sound of that, there’s at least one more film he’s obligated to star in, but it’ll be up to Warner Bros. as to which film it’ll be. It’s worth remembering, though, that even though he is contractually obligated to do one more, there is no guarantee it’ll happen. In a world where characters can be spread across several franchises and films within a universe, it’s just a way the studios cover their asses.
