Destiny 2: The Final Shape And Marathon Reportedly Delayed As Bungie Layoff’s Shock Staff

Destiny 2: The Final Shape and Marathon are reportedly delayed as Bungie layoff's shock staff

According to a new report by Bloomberg, Bungie games Destiny 2: The Final Shape and Marathon may be delayed. As a potential consquence of this, Bungie pushed through layoffs for a lot of staff, especialy those of community managers for Destiny 2.

So far the games have not been officially delayed at time of writing, but Bloomberg says The Final Shape, originally due early 2024, will now be delayed till June. Meanwhile Marathon, Bungies brand new PvP focused game could be delayed till 2025.

Whilst unconfirmed once again, the rumor is that Bungie who are now owned by Sony wished to delay The Final Shape into the new fiscal year. As a result, costs need to saved now. Therefore they have let almost the full Community team go, plus others. The Final Shape is potentially the final large expansion for Destiny 2, which has been Bungie’s flagship game for the last decade or more.

Bungie won’t stop supporting Destiny 2 it seems after TFS. However, they do have plans for a brand new PvP extraction shooter called Marathon. Marathon was also Bungie’s first ever game released, though I’m not sure on the similarities between both versions. Hell, no one has even really seen the new Marathon outside of Bungie.

The first news that began to break yesterday was the layoffs. Bungie employees took to social media to say they had been asked in for a meeting. When they arrived, they were told they’d be let go. This does appear to be financially based as Bungie’s CEO was full of praise for the staff he let go. If so, that could tie into the rumor it was Sony who pushed for all this. Since I first became aware of the layoffs it has been confirmed that Bungie has also parted ways with Destiny 2‘s main composers also. Is that because their work on The Final Shape is over, or will there just be no OST for Destiny 2 any longer? Weird one. To say the staff let go are shocked would be an understatement.

We are not currently aware of any actual delays in the readiness of The Final Shape, which again leads to the Sony angle. However, until some of these reports get confirmed by Bungie, or Sony, it’s all speculation. Not the layoffs though, those are 100% confirmed.

So, Destiny 2: The Final Shape and Marathon are reportedly delayed as Bungie layoffs shock staff. More on this if anything official happens. What do you think? Leave your thoughts below.
