Superfly: Director X On Remixing A Blaxploitation Film

Don’t call it a remake.

It’s more like a remix.

The 1972’s Super Fly that starred Ron O’Neal has certain elements that won’t fly in today’s society and culture. The cool character of Priest is reborn for today’s audiences in Superfly that stars Trevor Jackson in the title role.

The film also stars Jason Mitchell, Lex Scott Davis and Jennifer Morrison. It is helmed by Director X.

Superfly keeps the basic elements of the plot about a drug dealer, who is trying to push one last drug campaign before retirement. However, with one small incident, the whole operation could be taken down by corrupt cops, a Mexican cartel or even his former mentor.

LRM sat down for a video interview with Director X to discuss about the project. We talked about on why it is the perfect time to have a remake of the film. We also talked about Atlanta as the new setting for the film and working with Big Boi on the project.

Director X is best known for his music videos over the years with many famous artists, including Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child, Sean Paul, Ne-Yo, Kanye West, Rihanna, Fifth Harmony, Igga Azalea and Drake.

Superfly will be in theaters tomorrow nationwide.
