Disney Has Filed A New Patent For Lightsaber With Retractable Technology

Nerds quest for more realistic lightsaber won’t end until until we are hacking off each other’s arms with ones that work just like in the movies. The lightsaber is one of, if not the most iconic weapon in the history of cinema (which is why it saddens me greatly to see Luke toss it over his shoulder like it was a film from the DCEU).

News come today that Disney has filed a for a new patent which looks to advance us all one step closer to an actual lightsaber. With new retracting technology, this will likely be the most impressive lightsaber we’ve ever seen. You can check out a description of the new technology below from WDW News.

“The new technology exemplified in this patent application is used to build a lightsaber hilt that works like a motorized tape measure. At the press of a button, the tapes will extend to a total length several times that of the hilt itself. The tapes will also have some kind of LED lighting inside, such that the lightsaber can light up similar to the way they appear in the films. The same mechanics that operate to eject the blade will be used in reverse to retract the blade. The LEDs will be affixed to a tape that retracts onto a spool as the lightsaber blade retracts.”

With the choices Disney made for the next two upcoming series, being Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian, and the other being the as yet untitled series focusing on the rebellious adventures of Diego Luna’s Rogue One character, Cassian Andor, it kind of feels like there is a lightsaber ban. I realize there are other stories to tell in a galaxy far, far away, but there are also other stories to tell that involve either the Jedi, Sith, or both.
