The once beloved Indiana Jones franchise has been through hell since 2008. The long-delayed Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull split the fanbase with its ‘50s sci-fi B-movie direction. Then, the Disney/Lucasfilm-produced Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny failed to recoup its astronomical budget. But if this report from DisInsider proves true, we could see a whole new interpretation of Harrison Ford’s legendary hero.
Responding to a fan mailbag question, the outlet’s co-founder, Skyler Shuler, says that Lucasfilm is looking to restart the Indiana Jones property in the next few years.
“Lucasfilm is letting the franchise rest for a bit before they do a full reboot of the franchise. I would expect the studio to announce something next year at the D23 Expo because even though the last film tanked at the box office, Indiana Jones is still an iconic IP and Disney/Lucasfilm do not want to waste that.”

This wild rumor leaves one scratching their head. Why mess with such an iconic property when there’s countless other tales to tell in the universe? The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles series from the ‘90s provided some fascinating tales to fill out the archaeologist’s early years. Additionally, fans have pushed for an adult Short Round series with Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan reprising his role from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
The obvious reason for a possible reboot is due to Harrison Ford’s advancing age. At age 79 during Dial of Destiny’s production, it was too much of an ask for the audience to accept the hero past his prime. Something that director James Mangold admitted to in a Deadline Hollywood interview last year.
“You have a wonderful, brilliant actor who’s in his eighties. So I’m making a movie about this guy in his eighties, but his audience on one other level doesn’t want to confront their hero at that age. And I am like, I’m good with it. We made the movie. But the question is, how would anything have made the audience happy with that, other than having to start over again with a new guy? And then here come lifelong heroes from my childhood into my life going, ‘We have something for you to work on’. It was a “joyous experience, but it hurt … in the sense that I really love Harrison and I wanted audiences to love him as he was and to accept that that’s part of what the movie has to say—that things come to an end, that’s part of life”.

I have my doubts about the validity of DisInsider’s report, given Disney’s mandate for Lucasfilm to concentrate on saving Star Wars. It’s all the studio has left, given the disappointing performances of Dial of Destiny as well as the Willow series for Disney+. A page one reboot is simply something that I cannot imagine longtime fans screaming for.
