Harrison Ford Wanted To Look Like An Old Man In Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny

Harrison Ford says he wanted to look like an old man on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

There’s been a lot of talk about his age recently. However, Harrison Ford says he wanted to look like an old man on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Speaking about his upcoming movies recently, Ford explained how he told the stunt guys to ‘F— off’ when they tried to help him on a horse. The star says he wanted to look like an old man trying to get off a horse. That’s just where Indy is at in this movie.

Clearly Ford is happy with how ambitious the movie is in terms of exploring the character of Henry Jones Jr. as an older man. Indy was born in 1899, so that means the character is a little younger than Ford in this movie at only 70. That’s still very old to be jumping off moving vehicles and cracking whips though to be fair. But as Ford told Esquire Magazine, that was the selling point of Dial of Destiny for him.

“I wanted an ambitious movie to be the last one,” Ford said about reprising Indiana Jones. “And I don’t mean that we didn’t make ambitious movies before — they were ambitious in many different ways. But not necessarily as ambitious with the character as I wanted the last one to be.”

Talking about one of the action scenes in the movie Ford said,

“I thought, ‘What the f—?’ Like I was being attacked by gropers. I look down and there’s three stunt guys there making sure I didn’t fall off the stirrup,” Ford recalled. “They said, ‘Oh, we were just afraid because we thought, you know, and bah bah bah bah.’ And I said, ‘Leave me the fuck alone…Leave me alone, I’m an old man getting off a horse and I want it to look like that!”’

Ford also was the one to decide to go shirtless in one scene from the movie, and not because he got ripped for this one.

“Waking up in my underwear with the empty glass in my hand was my idea.”

That was one of my many criticisms of previous Indy movie, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. For me the movie tried to pass Indy off as too young and didn’t deal with the age of Ford enough as a feature of the movie. Instead, it felt like an old man trying to play a young Indiana Jones at times. Jones was only supposed to be 58 in KOTCS. Though, I guess it has been 15 years since that movie came out and the character has only aged 12 years since then.

I know, Lucas wanted the story set in the 50’s, I get that. However, perhaps the 60’s would have worked better for giving us an older Indy? A better script may also have helped I guess? I didn’t even like much of the direction of Spielberg in that movie either. Therefore, whilst I like the idea of playing into Indy’s old age in this new movie, it in no way means this movie works. So far reports are varied, and I’ll be deciding for myself on opening weekend. The only Indy movie I haven’t seen in theaters opening weekend is Raiders of the Lost Ark and that’s because I was only 3 years old.
