Disney Reveals Ricky Strauss As Creative Executive Over Their New Streaming Service

Disney executive Ricky Strauss has been given creative oversight over the company’s future streaming service that has been nicknamed “Disneyflix.” Strauss will have the power to approve new episodic series and movies and will develop the “strategic content vision” for the service.

As President Of Marketing for Disney for the past six years, Strauss was the mastermind behind the successful promotion of films like Black Panther, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Beauty And The Beast and Inside Out. Strauss’ career began in 1988 in the advertising department of TriStar Pictures and climbing the ladder to senior marketer at Columbia Pictures and President of Participant Media.

Disney is building this streaming service as its “Netflix-killer” and a make-it-or-break-it for its television division. Many currently at Disney feel Strauss has the perfect mix of skills to excel at his position. Kevin Mayer, chairman of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer and International, states that Strauss “an astute awareness of how audiences connect with the Disney brand.” Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, says that Strauss is “hugely supportive of storytellers” and has strong “creative instincts and expertise.”

The service is set to kick-off late next year, in which many of Disney’s products will leave Netflix, something Netflix is most likely working hard to prepare for.
