Disney’s Mulan Remake Receives A PG-13 Rating, And That’s Exciting

Disney’s next addition to their lineup of animated-turned-live-action films, Mulan, is just over a month away. With the countdown on, the film has acquired a new attachment to it that already sets it apart from the original: the rating.

On Tuesday, the Motion Picture Association of America granted Disney’s Mulan, due out March 27th, a PG-13 rating for “sequences of violence.” This makes Mulan the first remake to receive above a PG rating. Additionally, this is the first PG-13 live-action film the studio has produced since 2017’s Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. This could mean we are in store for a slightly more mature approach to the classic tale of the Chinese heroine.

While the film has received the PG-13 rating, it’s unlikely that will be the cause of any dip in box office profits. Like the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise as well as the Harry Potter franchise, PG-13 did not sway families from buying their tickets. Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part II raked in over $381 million domestically, grossing more than its previous PG-rated installments.

Moreover, this live-action remake looks to also differ in storytelling from its original, something previous remakes did not do. While Aladdin and The Lion King followed their original structures, this year’s Mulan comes off more like a fantasy war epic than a Disney musical. That alone makes this writer a bit more interested in this latest Disney adaptation.
