Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence is teaming up with Oscar-winning writer/director Adam McKay for the latter’s next big project. Don’t Look Up is McKay’s first project under his new first-look deal with Paramount and his Hyberobject Industries productions. Joining the party is Netflix, as it continues to acquire original content for its library in the ever-growing “streaming wars.”
Written and directed by McKay, who earned an Oscar for his adapted screenplay for The Big Short, Don’t Look Up follows two low-level astronomers on a giant media tour to warn mankind of a giant asteroid on a collision course with the Earth. Production on the film will start in April, with a release planned for later this year.

McKay had this to say about Jennifer Lawrence signing on for the project:
“I’m so thrilled to make this movie with Jen Lawrence. She’s what folks in the 17th century used to call ‘a dynamite talent.’ And the fact that Netflix sees this movie as a worldwide comedy sets the bar high for me and my team in an exciting and motivating way.”
Meanwhile, Scott Stuber, the head of Netflix films, added his admiration for McKay’s work:
“Adam has always had great timing when it comes to making smart, relevant, and irreverent films that depict our culture. Even if he somehow ends up predicting planet Earth’s imminent demise, we’re excited to add this to our slate before it all comes to an end.”
After this project, Lawrence and McKay will be teaming up again for the Legendary Entertainment picture Bad Blood. Written by Vanessa Taylor (The Shape Of Water, Divergent), Lawrence will play Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of the controversial blood-testing company Theranos. No word yet on when that film plans to be released.
